East Carolina Pirates Acquire Transfer from Old Dominion

May 16, 2024

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's basketball team has added sharpshooting wing Assa Essamvous from the transfer portal, head coach Michael Schwartz announced Monday.

Essamvous, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound native of London, Ontario, Canada, spent the past two seasons at Old Dominion. As a sophomore in 2023-24, he started in 32 of 33 games for the Monarchs, averaging 12.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

"Assa is a skilled wing who can really shoot the basketball," Schwartz said. "He's also a good rebounder and defender. We're excited to add him to our program and believe he can be a major contributor for us."

Essamvous shot 43.8 percent from the field last season, including 38.2 percent from three-point range. He also averaged 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game.

Essamvous will be eligible to play for the Pirates immediately. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

The Pirates are coming off a 2023-24 season in which they finished 18-14 overall and 11-7 in the American Athletic Conference. They reached the semifinals of the AAC Tournament before falling to eventual champion Houston.
