EU Unveils Artificial Intelligence Policy Framework
AI Office Established, AI Board to Advise
The European Commission has announced the establishment of an AI Office to oversee the implementation of the bloc's ambitious artificial intelligence strategy. The office will be responsible for coordinating AI-related initiatives across the EU, ensuring alignment with the bloc's values and goals.
In addition, an AI Board comprising representatives from EU member states has been created to advise and support the AI Office. The board will provide expertise and guidance on the development and implementation of AI policy, ensuring that it addresses the needs and concerns of all member states.
EU Artificial Intelligence Act to Set Risk-Based Requirements
The EU is also preparing to adopt a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence Act that will establish risk-based requirements for AI technologies. The law will categorize AI systems based on their potential impact on society and the environment, with stricter requirements for high-risk systems.
The proposed law will address issues such as data security, transparency, bias mitigation, and human oversight. It aims to ensure that AI systems are developed and used responsibly, while fostering innovation and economic growth.
EU Focuses on Banning High-Risk AI Applications
The EU is taking a precautionary approach to AI development, with a focus on banning high-risk applications. These include systems that pose a clear and significant threat to human rights, safety, or the environment.
Examples of such high-risk AI applications include facial recognition systems used for mass surveillance, autonomous weapons, and AI systems that can manipulate people's emotions or behaviors.
